Le’Andra Mackey

A 17 year old graduate from Government High School, Le’Andra is this year’s recipient of the Tristar Education Optimization Program scholarship; a four-year, 50 thousand dollar scholarship to pursue post-secondary studies at the College of The Bahamas. Le’Andra plans to study biochemistry and go on to medical school to become an anesthesiologist.

She speaks highly of Government High School and the teachers who supported her.  “There are people in your life who encourage you. Our teachers have inspired us to work hard, letting us come in and study during the Christmas break or lending personal books,” Le’Andra recalls. “It will be easy to study if you’re passionate about what you’re going to do in life.”

Le’andra’s hard work ethic came after the loss of her father at a young age. She knew she had to work extra hard. “He was a very educated man who inspired me to keep learning,” she says. “So, even though sometimes I didn’t want to go to school, I still went. I pushed myself, I worked hard, I had mentorship and guidance from many people that I’m very grateful to.”

One of those people is her chemistry teacher, Mr. Major. She credits that he is the reason why chemistry is her favourite subject. She explains that he broke everything down, he brought in extra books and made sure all the students understood. He held extra classes and was available any time a student needed him.

This type of mentorship will continue for Le’Andra at COB. As part of her scholarship she will be involved in the President’s Scholars Program, a personal mentorship program hosted by the president of COB. The program will also include leadership training which Le’Andra wants to use to help others and keep up with community service.

Le’Andra is active in her community, contributing her skills for a Stronger Bahamas. She does peer tutoring, is part of her youth ministry, the Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise and the Governor General’s youth award.

When reflecting on her seven awards, Le’Andra smiles and tells us “my trophy for academic excellence in French is special to me. I want to go to France, if only for a semester!”

Le’andra believes that to build a Stronger Bahamas, one must believe; “Believe in yourself, you can do everything that you want to do if you just put your mind to it. If you have no one to encourage you, encourage yourself. Always pray, and stay positive – positivity brings positivity.”
