Reducing Crime

The Government, along with many stakeholders and individual citizens, is responding to crime in our communities and focusing on the core issues that lead to crime. Many initiatives have been implemented with the aim of reducing crime and improving border security:

  • Urban Renewal 2.0, which is a comprehensive approach to crime and community safety, targets at-risk youth and focuses on information-sharing and resources available to the community at large to prevent crime. The Ministry of Works and Urban Development has resolved in Urban Renewal to have repaired 3,000 houses in urban and transitional communities by the end of the 2016/2017 fiscal year.
  • The Shock Treatment Programme shows troubled young males and females in our community the consequences of deviant behaviour and helps them make changes to their lives for the betterment of society.
  • The Government has strengthened the Anti-Gang Unit and the Amendment to the Penal Code to make gang membership a major criminal offence.
  • A commitment to Youth Mentorship Initiatives such as “Give Every Child a Father” helps at risk children in our communities to have role models.
  • The Bahamas now has a partnership with the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to seize illegal guns.
  • The Government is putting $20 million towards Citizen Security and the Justice Programme to address root causes of crime.
  • A Parental Responsibility Bill is being drafted to ensure children are nurtured and grow up with the values they need to be productive members of society.
  • Additional Defence Force vessels have been procured to protect our borders from illegal immigrants and poachers.
  • A Focus on Rehabilitation in our prison system has led to the transition of Her Majesty’s Prison from a punitive system to a rehabilitation system.
  • Over 300 police officers have been added to the Police Force and another 300 have been added to the RBDF. As well, more than 100 additional officers have been added to the Department of Corrections, and a marine unit to the Customs Department. New police cars were also provided to the RBPF.
  • The Government has established a New Royal Bahamas Defence Force Division dedicated solely to protecting our borders against illegal immigration.
  • The Bahamas signed a Small Arms Treaty at the United Nations to track the source of small arms that are smuggled into The Bahamas.

Justice System Reform

The Swift Justice initiative has been overwhelmingly successful. We are continually enhancing the system with the cooperation of Bahamian citizens.
