Creating Jobs

Through domestic investment, a renewed focus on growing our tourism industry, and by striving to diversify our economy, many new jobs have been created in The Bahamas. However, the unemployment rate is still unacceptably high.

Some initiatives that are part of building a Prosperous Bahamas include:

  •  BAMSI in Andros is providing more opportunities for employment and food security.
  • $200 million for Public Private Partnership (P3) projects in the fiscal 2015 budget to create jobs that will benefit Bahamians now and in years to come.
  • $20 million for Investing in Young Bahamians through addressing youth unemployment. In 2015/2016 the Government offered over 250 applicants the opportunity to participate in the Fresh Start Programme, which helps Bahamians gain the skills they need to enter the workforce.
  • Under a jointly funded agreement between the Government and Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd., the shipyard will increase its intake of its apprenticeship program for skilled trades to 40 per year.
  • Tax reductions have been implemented to support local business owners. Commercial property transfer tax has been reduced by 2.5% for businesses of all sizes. This measure will directly reduce costs for small businesses and contribute to job growth.
  • Over 2,500 young Bahamians have personally benefited from the training, job placement services and opportunities offered by the National Training Agency. Over the past year, 140 trainees from the Agency have secured full time employment, with an average wage of $310 per week.

The Government encourages Bahamian entrepreneurship. As part of the National Investment Policy the Government has a Bahamas Entrepreneurial Venture Capital Fund and a Small Business Loan Guarantee Program in support of Bahamian small businesses.

Strengthening the Economy

To ensure the ongoing economic success of our country, The Government is committed to implementing measures such as tax reform, fiscal transparency, and a review of public spending to evaluate effective management of our national debt.
