Education

The Government has worked hard to ensure an improved and expanded education system that will prepare young Bahamians for a prosperous future. This work continues.

Some recent initiatives include:

  • This fiscal year, the Government has invested $45 Million in Public Education including the construction of a new state of the art high school in Grand Bahama.
  • With over $16 million spent on Scholarship, investment in our young people has more than doubled in 4 short years.
  • The Bahamas High School Diploma Programme sets a standard for graduation. Primary and secondary schools now have an internationally recognized standard for graduation that holds everyone within the education system accountable.
  • Mandatory Testing in Primary Schools has been implemented to identify children who would benefit from a different learning environment that is more responsive to their needs.
  • Special Education is a top priority for the Government in order to assess how each child learns and enable them to succeed. The Marjorie Davis Institute for Special Education officially opened in April 2015.
  • $16 million has been allocated for the College of The Bahamas Transition to a University. This significant transition will increase our nation’s capacity for research and innovation, and is a significant step forward in stemming the tide of young Bahamians pursuing higher education abroad.
  • The Fresh Start Programme has been expanded, which educates and trains youth for careers. In 2015/2016 the Government offered over 250 applicants the opportunity to participate in the Fresh Start Programme, which helps Bahamians gain the skills they need to enter the workforce.
  • The Government’s National Training Agency supplies 20 hours of job preparation training for tenth and eleventh graders as a necessary requirement for the current High School Diploma. Over 2,500 young Bahamians have personally benefited from the training and over the past 11 months, 140 trainees from the National Training Agency have secured full time employment with an average wage of $310 per week.
  • The establishment of the Student Achievement Unit  will collect and analyse data to ensure that no child falls through the cracks with the goal of increasing the graduation rate from 50% to 85% by 2030.
  • The government has invested $5 Million in an Education Management Information System.  The program will address students who are not attending school regularly or not performing at grade level.
  • Labour Relations Unit of The Bahamas, had a 91% success rate for trade disputes within the last year, meaning only 9% of disputes filed had to be referred to either the Bahamas Industrial Tribunal or the Supreme Court
  • The announced establishment of the Youth Environmental Corps, will provide apprenticeship and training to hundreds of Bahamians in the developing green and blue economies  in The Bahamas.

Social Programmes

The Government is improving and modernizing social programs to benefit all Bahamians.
