Urban Renewal Reaches Out to Residents of Elizabeth Estates

The Urban Renewal 2.0 Programme continued its quest to uplift and bring hope and relief to residents, taking its Community Uplifting Services into Elizabeth Estates Wednesday, March 15th.

Residents, young and old alike, gathered on the basketball court at the rear of the Police Station and engaged in praise and worship led by the Urban Renewal Praise Team, a testimonial by Shelton Burrows, President of the Elizabeth Estates Community Association, words of encouragement by Bishop Arnold Josey, Commonwealth Baptist Church and Pastor Dwight Ferguson, Church of God of Prophecy, Elizabeth Estates. Musical selections were by Prophet Lawrence Rolle, Mother Rachel Mackey and the Urban Renewal Band Ensemble. The residents also received care packages, which contained staples including canned meats and fish, cream, bread, sugar and more.

Giving an overview of Urban Renewal, Algernon Allen, Co-Chairperson, said the programme is the “most” important social initiative that this country has seen in decades.

He said, “It touches the lives of everybody across the board. We’re not only repairing homes, and we’ve repaired more than 1500 with thousands more to prepare.

“We’re also about assuring that our youth are doing things that are important to their social development.”

Co-Chair Allen also highlighted the Peace Ambassadors who walk the streets of this country during times when there is grief and pain as a result of crime and sickness. “They bring balm, care, compassion,” he said.

Co-Chairperson Cynthia Pratt explained that she came out of retirement to assist Urban Renewal because it is about helping people.

“I know some of you are smiling outwardly and on the inside the cupboards are bare, but Urban Renewal brings you hope today. The only way we will know is for you to tell us. We will do what we can,” she said.

Uplifting Services will continue in the communities of Bamboo and Bozine Town.
