Merger of NSA Grounds to UB to Form University Commons

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Dr. Daniel Johnson held a Press Conference, March 31, 2017 to announce the merger of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Grounds (known as ‘the sports centre area’) to the University of the Bahamas to form what would be known as the ‘University Commons.’

According to Director of Sports Timothy Munnings “this convergence of two national establishments fundamental to the development of Youth, Sports and Culture, along with Education, will create amazing opportunities for many generations.  A world-class sports park and a premier University of The Bahamas will be the first choice for Bahamian students.”

The 500-acre space will house 28 facilities inclusive of a golf course, track and field stadium, Big Pond Park, a national sports park, green space for the general public, a soccer field, tennis court, baseball field, rugby, and other athletic spaces.

Manager of the National Sports Authority Jeffrey Beckles noted that the enhancement of the facilities will help to validate the University’s primary existence. The collaborative effort between both parties will assist the University to grow and become more marketable. He also stated that the partnership/client relationship will continue after the merger.

Minister Johnson expressed his excitement and delight in fostering a partnership with the University of The Bahamas. He stated it was an historic event and advised that all Bahamians should be proud of this accomplishment.

He also noted that the University of The Bahamas dormitory will also be constructed on the grounds of the University providing an opportunity to house international teams wishing to visit The Bahamas.  Minister Johnson stated that the National Sports Academy will also be attached to the University of The Bahamas.
