‘How to Be a Savvy Consumer’: Consumer Protection Commission Holds Mall Exhibit

The Ministry of Labour & National Insurance’s Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) held an exhibition at Marathon Mall in recognition of World Consumer Rights Day, March 15.  The exhibit also fostered increased awareness of consumer rights protection.

Commission PR & Marketing Coordinator Machelle Carroll said the team distributed Consumer Tips, for example: information on using public wi-fi networks, hiring a contractor to do home improvements, what to look for in an estimate, tips on buying health products, shopping online, as well as guidelines for payday loans.

“The Commission is committed to ensuring that every Bahamian is aware of these rights, and that their rights are protected by the Commission,” said Ms. Carroll.  The CPC also wants the public to know they can bring their matters to the attention of the Commission to gain advice in the shortest possible time.

CPC provides Consumer Education, Business Education, Market Intelligence services, Research on relevant issues, Complaint Resolution services, Consumer Advocacy, and sensitization of the public to Consumer Protection Legislation.

The CPC maintains its mission to enforce consumer protection law — an area that regulates relationships between individual consumers and the businesses that sell those goods and services.

“Consumer protection covers a wide range of topics including, but not necessarily limited to, product liability, privacy rights, unfair business practices, fraud, misrepresentation, and other consumer-business interactions,” said Ms. Carroll.
