How is the Government Building a Modern Bahamas?

The Government of The Bahamas continues to be committed to modernizing The Bahamas through investments in the education system, the transition of the College of The Bahamas into the University of The Bahamas and by helping Bahamians in need through social programmes. While there is still work to do, especially in providing better access to health care services and educational facilities  in the Family Islands, significant progress has been made. We cannot achieve all these goals on our one, and  encourage all Bahamians to get involved in working together to build a stronger Bahamas.

Some recent work includes:

  • Increasing in literacy and numeracy instructional time by 100% and 80% respectively for Grades 1 to 3
  • Doubling scholarships investment since 2011 from $7.75 million to $16.2 million in 2016
  • Transitioning the College of The Bahamas to the University of The Bahamas, an internationally accredited university that will focus on four pillars: academics, service, infrastructure and financial management
  • More than tripling marine protected areas across the country from 2.2 to 7.5 million acres
  • Modernizing the delivery of social services through the RISE conditional cash transfer prepaid card initiative
  • A new multi-service facility for persons with developmental disabilities that will service over 250 persons
