Commonwealth Day Celebrated in The Bahamas

The Bahamas joined 52 countries around the world as it raised the Commonwealth Flag in unison with over 700 other flags at 10:00 hours Monday, March 13th, in Rawson Square, Downtown, Bay Street in observance of Commonwealth Day.

Each year Commonwealth Day is celebrated on the second Monday in March and allows communities and organizations to promote the values upheld by the Commonwealth of peace, democracy and equality, and the opportunities for friendship and cooperation with fellow Commonwealth citizens around the globe.

Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Marguerite Pindling headed the list of officials at the Fly-a-Flag for the Commonwealth special ceremony, which was organized by the Scout of Association of The Bahamas.  The Hon. Allyson Maynard Gibson, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, primary school students and representatives of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Boys’ Brigades and Girls’ Brigades were also present.

In his introduction, Lamar Pinder of the 4th Bahamas Scout Group, said “Scouts here in The Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta Mauritius, New Zealand, Samoa, Sri Lanka, and Trinidad and Tobago will also be raising the Commonwealth Flag at 10:00 hours, joining thousands of other young people around the Commonwealth to celebrate and the launch of this year’s special theme: ‘A Young Commonwealth’.

He quoted His Excellency Kamalesh Sharma, former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, who said “All our citizens, particularly the young, can express appreciation for the Commonwealth and the values for which it stands as set out in the Commonwealth Charter, and the rich opportunities it offers for mutual support towards more inclusive social, and more equitable economic progress.”

Dame Marguerite read the Commonwealth Day Message on behalf of the Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, QC, Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations.  Patricia Rolle, Commissioner, Girls’ Brigade Bahamas Council, read the Commonwealth Affirmation.
