Attorney General Hon. Allyson Maynard Gibson on Swift Justice Programme

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Senator The Hon. Z.C. Allyson Maynard Gibson, discussed the Swift Justice Programme on Bahamas at Sunrise during the week of November 30th.

“The importance of the introducing the programme is that the current system in place is not satisfactory”, explains the Attorney General. “When we talk about Swift Justice, we are talking about fixing the justice system by getting stakeholders involved and doing it differently. It will no longer be doing business as usual.”

The overall goal is to make the justice system more efficient. This is done by efficiently managing time so that more cases can move through smoothly through the system, and that matters that come before a jury are heard in a reasonable period of time, which will result in fewer persons being let out on bail. Fundamental changes include judges being required to change the style in which they conduct the hearing by identifying what the allegation and evidence is, and managing trial time properly.

The Attorney General states that the Swift Justice Programme is about effective case management. The public deserves a sufficient system.

“This is not something that can be fixed overnight,” says Ms. Maynard-Gibson. “It is however, a cause for optimism and creates hope for the future.”

The Swift Justice Programme is a major part of the Government’s Safer Bahamas initiative – an important pillar in building a Stronger Bahamas.
